Hi Everyone - After a very long month of waiting we finally had the appt with the Pediatric GI Specialist yesterday. They were able to confirm what we already knew...Mason has reflux. And they also suspect that he has an intolerence for milk proteins which is most likely causing all the gas & fussiness & much of the vomiting we experience on a daily basis.
They changed his medicine from Zantac to Pepcid and almost doubled the dose as they think much of the crying is from heartburn from all of the milk/formula running back up his throat.
They asked us to stop using formula (milk and soy based) and for me to nurse exclusively.
Now the tricky part of the therapy here is my part...no milk products at all for Momma!
Sounds easy right? Not so much...they also want me to have no casiens, whey or soy...that pretty much eliminates all packaged foods, breads, some pastas, peanut butter, margerine...the list goes on and on.
They say it could take as much as 7-10 days to eliminate all milk proteins from my system so within a week and a half to two weeks we should know if this has been Mason's issue. They're hoping the Pepcid makes him feel better in a day or so (we hope so too) and should also allow him to sleep better both at nap time and in the night. The good news is that if the proteins are the issue, he will outgrow it, it just seems that tiny tummies can't break down the proteins as well as bigger tummies. If he's not better in a couple of weeks we go back in for testing to see what else could be causing the trouble.
Our only salvation from long evenings of crying has been his tub...Boy does he love to take a bath! We hope the charm and novelty of it doens't wear off before we find out the answer to all of his fussiness and pain!
Enjoy the new pics! Lynne
